Physical and Chemical Fundamentals of Oxy-Fuel Combustion

The goal of project area A is to gain a fundamental understanding of the kinetics of volatile release and char conversion under oxy-fuel conditions. Measurements are based on a selection of representative solid fuels covering various types of biomass. A synthetic solid fuel will represent a reference case. Catalytic effects of mineral ash components will be examined as a well as high temperature sorption effects on the solid fuel surface. Kinetics will be measured at temperatures, heating rates and in atmospheres realistic for power plants firing conditions. The experimental approach is complemented by modelling. This ranges from atomistic simulations, kinetic modelling of solid fuel conversion to the description of transport processes in the fuel particles. Project Area A provides predictive rate laws for solid fuel conversion needed in all numerical projects in Area B and C.
