Sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification of pulverised solid fuel combustion

The ultimate goal of this project is to characterize the progression of uncertainties in the simulations of the full scale boiler. Therefore, for the purpose of the first phase of this proposal, the full scale problem is broken down into its principal components, where a certain aspect of the flow is studied in each configuration; from the combustion process of a single solid particle, and the interaction of solid particles in a group setting to the underlying turbulent flow. As an added complication, the large number of parameters, present in such simulations, causes a purely forward approach to sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification to become very expensive and almost infeasible. Therefore, the use of adjoint-based algorithms in order to identify and quantify the underlying sensitivities and uncertainties, is proposed.
